Today's Scripture

When the Lord brought back his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream! We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.” Yes, the Lord has done amazing things for us! What joy! Restore our fortunes, Lord, as streams renew the desert. Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest.
— Psalm 126 (NLT)

Reflect on the Word

Psalm 126 is one of the “Songs of Ascents,” which were songs sung by the Israelites as they traveled to Jerusalem for special festivals. The psalm is filled with joy and thankfulness to God for rescuing them from a time of sadness and captivity.

It also looks ahead with hope. The song ends with the promise that “those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy.” It’s a beautiful picture reminding us that even when we have hard times, God promises a joyful harvest.

Our faith doesn’t depend on what’s going on around us. It depends on God. That means that even when we’re going through challenges or really scary things, we can still obey and trust God. We can experience His promised joy and peace in the darkness because we know He is with us. Even though we might have to go through hard seasons, one day, either here on Earth or in heaven, God will turn our tears of sadness into shouts of joy.
