Today's Scripture
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
— Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)
God invites us to live in His big story, to run the race He has marked out for us. He doesn’t expect us to do this on our own strength—He gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit. He also gives us the gift of sharing the race with other believers—the great cloud of witnesses mentioned in Heb. 12:1.
Living in God’s story comes with challenges. We face hard and painful things. The verses in Hebrews encourage us to reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice. Jesus died a painful death on the cross so that we could have a relationship with God again. Thanks to Jesus, we will one day be with God in heaven!
As followers of Jesus, we are promised a life with God’s presence—both now and for eternity. We’re invited to fix our eyes on Jesus and live by the power of the Holy Spirit. A life of faith empowers us to live courageously in His story, boldly loving others and not losing heart because He is our joy.
